Using F-Prot’s  [DOS version] Virus Scanner on a computer.

The DOS version is FREE to individuals and can be updated manual.

The directions below will allow you to run F-Prot off three 3 ½ diskettes.

1.    First label the diskettes “BOOT”, “DISK 1 – F-Prot” and “DISK 2 – F-Prot”.

2.    Next we are going to make the disk labeled “BOOT” bootable. So put the BOOT disk in your floppy drive. Then get to a DOS prompt. At the DOS prompt, type A: this command accesses the A: drive. Next at the prompt type

“format a: /s”  (the /s tells the computer to transfer the system files to the floppy).

3.    Next go into Windows explorer and create two directories, one called fprot and the other one called fprot2.

4.    Next we are going to download the F-Prot virus scanner and the newest definition. Open your web browser and point it to http://www.f-prot.com/f-prot. Once the page has loaded on the screen, locate the download link and click once. After page has loaded, scroll down page and locate “F-Prot Antivirus For DOS” and click the Download Now link. After clicking the link another page will appear and ask you which file you want to download and you need to click the ZIP File link out beside USA. After clicking ZIP File a box will appear asking you where you want to save the file, save the file into the directory called fprot2.

5.    After the file has been downloaded to your computer, go back to your browser, we are now going to get the latest definitions. To get the definitions, open back up the site http://www.f-prot.com/f-prot and once page has loaded on screen, locate the download link and click once. After page has loaded, scroll down page and locate “Latest Signature files for F-Prot Antivirus”. There are two files that we need to get, first click “Signature files for Application/Script Viruses and Trojans”, after you click on the file a box will appear asking you where you would like to save the file, put this file into the fprot2 directory. Next click the other file named “Signature files for documents/Office/Macro Viruses”, after you click on the file a box will appear asking you where you would like to save the file, also put this file in the fprot2 directory.

6.    Next since all of the files we downloaded are Zip files, we need a utility called Pkunzip to work with these files. To get Pkunzip, open up your Web Browser and point it the following web site, http://crowleys.crsc.k12.ar.us/available_files.htm, once the file has loaded on the screen scroll down the page and locate “Pkunzip – A utility needed to uncompress zipped files” and click it. After you click on the file a box will appear asking you where you would like to save the file, put this file in the fprot2 directory.

7.    Now we have all of the necessary files, so we are ready to create our diskettes. Next get to a DOS prompt. At the DOS prompt type

cd \fprot2 and press enter. This command brings us to the fprot2 directory. Next we need to issue 3 commands to unzip the files into the fprot directory. Type each of the commands below in the order they are typed and press enter after each to unzip the files:

        pkunzip f-prot.zip c:\fprot

NOTE : After pressing ENTER on the two command below you will receive a PKUNZIP Warning! …..already exists….We are updating files so we want to overwrite any files, so press the “a” key to overwrite all files.

        pkunzip fp-def.zip c:\fprot

        pkunzip macrdef2 c:\fprot

8.    Now we have all files unzipped into our fprot directory. We are now ready to move files onto our diskettes. First we need to change into our fprot directory. To do this at the DOS prompt type cd \fprot. Now insert DISK 2 into the floppy drive and at the prompt type

“move sign.def a:” once file has finished moving, type at the prompt again “move sign2.def a:” once this file has been moved, take out DISK 2.

9.    Now insert DISK 1 and at the prompt type “move *.* a:” this command will move the rest of the files into DISK 1.

10.                       Once all files are moved, you need to “write-protect” each diskette. This is done by moving the small square in the corner of the diskette up so you can see through the diskette. This will prevent viruses from being written to our diskettes while we are scanning.

11.                       Next put the BOOT disk into a computer you want to check and turn on the computer. If your BIOS is set to boot to the floppy first then your computer will read the BOOT disk and boot to a: at a DOS prompt. (Windows 9* will not start) (if your computer does boot into Windows then your BIOS needs to be changed)

12.                       Next take out the BOOT disk and put in the disk labeled DISK 1 and type at the prompt “f-prot /loaddef”. The computer will start to read the disk and fairly soon it will ask you to insert the diskette with the DEF files on it. When it does take out DISK 1 and insert DISK 2. After it finishes reading DISK 2 (this will take a few minutes) it will ask for DISK 1 again, so take out DISK 2 and insert DISK 1. The computer will finish loading the F-prot Antivirus program. Once the program loads onto the screen, you will need to change a couple of settings before running it. To change the settings use your arrow keys on your keyboard (mouse will not work). The word Scan should be in Red, use your right arrow key and press once, this will move over and make the word Start in Red. Next press your downward arrow twice and the word Action should be highlighted in Red. With the word Action in Red press the enter key and some selections will appear, use your downward arrow key to come down and select “Automatic disinfection” by pressing the Enter key(this will allow the program to try to disinfect an infected file and if it cannot then the program will delete the file). Next use your upward arrow and move back up to the word Start and make Red and press the Enter button. This will start the scanning of your computer.

13.                       Once scanning has completed, it will let you view a report. Take a look at this report and see if any files got deleted and you might need to replace some deleted files if they are system files.
